The night she almost drowned,
the lifeguard found a blade in her hand.
She said it was her best friend,
the only thing that understood.
And he told her that everyone is like a ship
that’s taken time and effort to built.
There are always harbours and lighthouses
so don’t ever just give up.
“You,” he said, “have come so far.
You wake up every morning
and tuck yourself into bed every night.
When you take another breath,
you are pushing yourself towards another second.
Don’t throw away the hard work
you’ve put into this.
Keep building
and stay afloat.
Even when there’s water damage.
They can be fixed.”

If there’s one thing you both learn before being friends again is this: You broke up for a reason. You wanted certain things in life and he didn’t share the same ideals. Moving on to neutral ground means understanding that sometimes things just don’t work out, no matter how much you want them to. Staying friends means keeping the other in your life, and for that to happen, you need to be 100 percent cool with being just buds.
